Try to remember

Changing lights

Try to remember

I once read a beautiful poem
written by a black poet
of long ago and far from home
was it joyful or just sad?

I don’t remember

Of happier times when I was young
of open prairies and kinder deeds
of grass and sun, and wind in my face
was it real or just a dream?

I try to remember

Reality yes, but wrapped in cotton candy,
and sweat and laughter, tears and hunger
and dreams that die, whilst new are born
no going back… one must press on…

I do remember

Priorities change as one grows old
and now I’m here, sitting on a rock
reflecting back on what once was
youth, joy, a beautiful poem?

I have forgotten
