30 species of Azalea

Azaleas are a group of flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, known for their stunning blooms and versatility in garden design. They thrive in a variety of environments, from temperate forests to cultivated landscapes, and are particularly prized for their vibrant colors and delicate petals. In this blog post, we will explore the rich history of azaleas, different species and varieties, cultivation tips, and their significance in horticulture.

Azaleas have been cultivated for centuries, with origins tracing back to ancient Asia. The popularity of azaleas surged during the 18th and 19th centuries when European botanists began to explore the Far East. They brought back numerous species, leading to the development of many hybrids that are beloved in gardens today.

Leon’s journey into azalea breeding is a testament to the resilience of horticultural passion. His focus on reviving the harde Gentse not only honors traditional methods but also plays a crucial role in preserving genetic diversity among azaleas. This is important, as different climates and conditions can threaten the survival of certain varieties.

Reviving the harde Gentse was not just about cultivation; it was about creating a legacy. Leon understood the ecological significance of preserving these plants. By fostering biodiversity, he contributed to healthier ecosystems, which is vital in our changing climate.

Leon and Denise’s expeditions to find surviving azaleas were filled with adventures. They visited numerous parks, botanical gardens, and historical estates. Each azalea they discovered came with its own story, reflecting the cultural heritage and the beauty of nature. These journeys also provided opportunities for them to network with other horticulturists and share knowledge.

Among the over 30 species they found, each offered unique characteristics that enriched Leon’s breeding program. For example, the Rhododendron fortunei, known for its fragrant blooms, and Rhododendron mucronulatum, celebrated for its hardiness. These hybrids not only bring aesthetic pleasure but also resilience to varying climatic conditions.

Opening their garden to visitors each May created a sense of community. It allowed people to appreciate the beauty of azaleas and learn about the different species. Many visitors left inspired to incorporate azaleas into their own gardens, which contributed to a resurgence in azalea cultivation across Europe.

The return of azaleas to florists’ shelves signifies more than just a trend; it represents a revival of appreciation for traditional horticulture. Each bloom serves as a reminder of the dedication and labor that goes into nurturing these beautiful plants. This page, therefore, stands as a tribute not only to Leon and Denise but also to the countless horticulturists who strive to keep this legacy alive.

If you’re inspired to learn more about azaleas and their care, consider exploring books and resources dedicated to gardening. There are numerous guides that cover everything from soil preparation to hybridization techniques, ensuring you have the knowledge to cultivate your own stunning azaleas.

When Leon had to quit his work for health reasons, he focused on the breed of azaleas. A passion inherited from his uncle, Leon DE KONING and sustained by his wife Denise.

At the time most European azaleas had fallen into oblivion.
And he decided to revive the harde Gentse, an azalea that stands extreme cold temperatures.

Thanks to public libraries he was able to picture several old species.
And with his wife Denise he travelled across the country and abroad
in search of surviving shrubs in parks and old properties.

Together, they discovered more than 30 old species.
And through the years, many new hybrids saw daylight.
His latest one being Madame Leon Declercq.

Every year in may, their garden used to be open for visitors. A must for the buff. And a feast for the eyes.

Today, florist all over Europe are cultivating those species again. Thanks to them. This page is dedicated to them
